History at Glamorgan is one of the University’s most successful research areas. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise – the government’s official measure of research capability – 50% of our research output was rated in the top two categories: ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’. That was the best performance of any History Department in Wales.
We carry out research in a variety of post-1450 fields, from sixteenth-century Germany to contemporary America. Our interests are wide-ranging – we deal with topics as diverse as anarchism, Atlantic slavery, ‘shell shock’, witchcraft, and Solidarnosc – but our particular strengths lie in the history of early modern and twentieth-century Europe.
Some of what we do is announced to our professional community via scholarly monographs and articles in learned journals, the traditional outlets of our craft. We also try to reach a wider and more diverse audience through websites, television and radio programmes, exhibitions and other forms of public history. Our interests and current projects are described on this site.
